If educational discourse has remained insulated from the larger streams of cultural change and movements in social theory, how much even more so has psychology within education remained the rearguard defense of early industrial thought and practice. The intoxication of individualizing, stratifying, historically, socially, existentially and transcendentally abstracted knowledge was based not only in its abuse as an everyday drug of power, but in its idolatrous efforts at self-deification with claims of an objectivity beyond any context. I wish I could say that this long night of factory-like, alienating type of thought and practice in education is finally over.
But the educational apparatus still marches to its drummer, without any knowledge or embarrassment of the small place of this particular discourse in the historical human drama. Still, the industrial education apparatus, which used and enabled this poor exchange of repackaged disciplinary practice for human understanding, now slowly responds to demands for an historically more efficient postindustrial education.
And its academic partner, postmodernism, has reached the shores of education, fueling long-standing dissatisfactions with the hegemonic knowledge claims of military-industrial practice which educational academics naively represented as the core educational science of intelligence, and later, development. Not only the socioeconomic demands of a postindustrial, network society, but also its culture, in the resacralizing languages of the new age, renders the industrial educational psychology science of intelligence not merely ideological, but socially dysfunctional and culturally decadent Castells, ; Wexler, An unknown error has occurred.
