Persino i concetti di base della teoria dei giochi, come la tabella di guadagno per i giochi come il dilemma del prigioniero, sono relegati in soffitta Feb 25, Saurabh rated it did not like it. It is evidently clear, on just reading the title and introduction, that Siegfried's only purpose to write this book was to collect the downstream trickle from Sylvia Nasar's excellent "A Beautiful Mind" and the subsequent movie.
He begins by namedropping Isaac Asimov's Foundation, which apparently he loves very much indeed, and tries to tie it in with game theory, to poor effect I like one thing, and I want to write a book about this other thing, so let me connect them together. Then he says h It is evidently clear, on just reading the title and introduction, that Siegfried's only purpose to write this book was to collect the downstream trickle from Sylvia Nasar's excellent "A Beautiful Mind" and the subsequent movie.
Then he says he will attempt to show us how game theory explains the meaning of life and everything in it paraphrasing. I didnt stick around for this bag of gas to discharge.

John Nash, premio Nobel per l'Economia nel Jan 07, Tom rated it liked it Recommends it for: people who are interested in mathematics. I have to admit that I have mixed views on this book. I'm glad I read it since the author provides some interesting and sometimes compelling information on the cross-discipline applications of game theory and some of the history and evolution of game theory along with other areas of study.

I can understand his desire to make the book more approachable to a broader audience, but achieving the right balance to satisfy a broad audience is always difficult. I was looking for something a bit deeper mathematically and more narrowly focused on Nash's work. Overall I would recommend this book to people who have an interest in mathematics, but don't expect this book to answer all questions or provide more than a good baseline to leverage as a starting point.

Too dry and over my head. Apr 05, Rossrn Nunamaker rated it liked it Shelves: non-fiction , math-science. Not the subject for everyone, but if you were ever interested in game theory or a code of nature, this was a very interesting read addressing both the origins and current practices and use of game theory. Siegfried's writing was accessible and understandable to the layman like me. Nash won the Nobel Prize in economics in for his pioneering research published in the s on game theory. I was first exposed to game theory during political science classes in college and again at both a project management course and an executive education program.
Game theory's most well known example is the "prisoner's dilemma" a zero-sum game that addresses risk and reward, but the book goes well beyond that to discuss how game theory is now being used in all fields of science, and as a result, the author contends it may be the key to a "Code of Nature" crossing all branches and disciplines.
May 31, Mark Schomburg rated it it was amazing Shelves: mathematics , philosophy , history , economics. Tom Siegfried takes seriously enough a lot of science fictional concepts such as Isaac Asimov's "psychohistory" and puts these into a new more modern context. What's very heartwarming about this is that a reader familiar with some fictional worlds will find a friend here interfacing those worlds to our present day economics or what not. Though this book lists Nash in the title, and there is coverage of that economist within, a lot more ground is covered beyond that.
If the title draws you in at Tom Siegfried takes seriously enough a lot of science fictional concepts such as Isaac Asimov's "psychohistory" and puts these into a new more modern context. If the title draws you in at all, be assured there is yet more to ponder.
Oct 19, Ton van Gessel rated it it was ok Shelves: math. The book says to be about the math of Nash. There is very little math in this book. It is an overview in general terms about game theory. It is about applied math with a light focus on the social sciences. At first I was a bit puzzled by the fact they seem to be adjusting the math to fit the observations but that's applied math I think.
I did rate it three stars but that's because the subject is new to me and as a gentle introduction it's ok.
